The grand opening of the STX Vietnam offshore shipyard and naming ceremony of the yard's first vessel, "Skandi Emerald", was held on 28 April 2010 with the presence of the Norwegian Ambassador Ståle Risa, local Vietnamese authorities and representatives of the Norwegian business community. This is the first vessel in series of six anchor-handlers of STX design to be built at STX offshore Vietnam for Aker DOF Deepwater, a Norwegian ship-owner. "Skandi Emerald" has been sold to Vietsopetro and will soon be operating in Vietnam. The second and the third vessels are expected to be handed over in October 2010 and May 2011, respectively. STX Vietnam Offshore is a subsidiary of STX Europe (former Aker Yards). The shipyard is located in Ba Ria, Vung Tau province, which is the centre for Vietnam's oil & gas industry. The shipyard has 650 employees and indirectly generates about 4.000 jobs for local supportive industries.
