Cooperation in the fisheries sector

Last updated: 12/02/2010 // The fisheries sector is one of the priority areas for co-operation between Norway and Vietnam. Nha Trang University, the leading university in the fisheries sector in Vietnam, is one of the Vietnamese agreement partners.

 

Following up the success of phase I (2003-2008), the Nha Trang University project phase II (2009-2011) aims at capacity building for the staff of the university in research and training to improve the quality of experts in the fisheries sector educated from the university. The capacity building is through institutional co-operation with three leading Norwegian universities in the fisheries sector: Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS) – University of Tromsø (UoT); Institute of Fisheries and Marine Biology – University of Bergen and Institute of Biology – Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Total funding committed for phase II is NOK 13.2 million. The project will come to its end by December 2011.

Norwegian partners

The project has been acknowledged as a main contributor in improving the capacity of Nha Trang University at the regional level in fisheries economics, aquaculture, bio-technology marine resource management, environment and university management. A large number of teaching staff has been given opportunities to take part in various types of training, from postdoctoral, PhD, master to short-term courses. Valuable hands-on expertise has been transferred through joint research projects with Norwegian partners, and results of the co-operation have been published in international and local scientific journals and used in development of fisheries management policy of the country
