Vietnam National University i Hanoi lanched an informative video about the IPCC Lead Authors Meeting and climate change during the week-long IPCC session. The video is mostly in Vietnamese and contains some strong pictures.
IPCC's Second Lead Athors Meeting in Hanoi
More than 100 world experts from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) gathered at the Vietnam National University (VNU) in Hanoi last week to discuss the contents of a new IPPC assessment on extreme events, disasters risk reduction, and climate change adaptation.
Norway and the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) initiated and prepared a proposal for this special report at the 29th session of IPPC in Geneva in 2008. The meeting in Hanoi this year, partially funded by Norway through the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Vietnam, is the second of a series of four lead authors’ meetings, which all aim at the finalisation of the report in November 2011. The report will assess measures that governments and people can take to build resilience to weather and climate hazards.
Perfect setting
Ambassador of Norway Ståle Torstein Risa, and the Secretary of the IPCC Dr. Renate Christ, were both expressing their gratitude to Vietnam and the Vietnam National University Hanoi for hosting this important event.
– Norway believes Vietnam gives a perfect setting for the authors’ meeting on the Special Report on “Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation, said Ambassador Risa.
Vietnam, with its long coast line, is one of the countries most vulnerable to a rising sea level and one of the countries most at risk with respect to natural disasters.
– This poses tremendous challenges for Vietnam and the Vietnamese people. Food security is only but one example of the many serious issues at hand. A rising sea level will have dire effects on the country’s rice production. As one of the world’s largest rice exporters, this will not only threaten food security in Vietnam itself but also the food security for the whole Asian region, Ambassador Risa stated in his opening remarks.
Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam and Minister of Education, Mr. Thien Nhan, was expressing the Government of Vietnam’s appreciation of the efforts of IPCC and all the scientists in the preparation of the special report.
IPCC
The IPPC was established in 1988 under the joint sponsorship of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), to assess the major scientific and technical issues confronting governments and other parties interested in climate change. Through its reports, methodologies, workshops, and expert meetings, the IPCC has become a primary source of independent and scientific information for governments and other organizations.
