The Royal Norwegian Consulate in Vientiane was officially opened on 1 June 2010, with a ceremony that included members from the Government and the diplomatic and consular community, in addition to representatives from international organizations.

The Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam and Lao PDR, Mr. Ståle Risa, was pleased to mark the occasion together with the Honorary Consul, Mr. Henrik Schmith, and in his speech the Ambassador said that “With the establishment of the consulate, Norway and Laos enter a new phase of diplomatic relations”. Areas of cooperation between Norway and Lao PDR include humanitarian disarmament and hydropower. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 12 November 1991.
