Dang Van Ty was wounded during an American bombing in Vietnam. He was evacuated from his home in Tay Ninh province in the South of Vietnam to Norway in 1968 and lived in Norway since then. He started his studies at the National Academy of Art and Design and later the National Academy of Art in Oslo.

Although Ty has settled down and is well adapted to the special conditions in Norway, he never forgets his childhood country which can be seen from the two books he has written "My Childhood in Vietnam" and "Journey home" published in 1982 and 1984 respectively after his journey back to Vietnam. His book "My childhood in Vietnam" was translated into Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Dutch and received warm welcome from readers in Europe.
