Gender Equality and Exploitation/Human Trafficking

For the last two years the Vietnamese authorities have intensified their work on women’s rights. One example is the preparation of a Law on Gender Equality (2007) and a Law on Domestic Violence. Both will apply from July 1st 2008. Furthermore, there have been preparations for a national action plan against human trafficking. The present challenge is therefore the implementation of these new laws.

In 2007 the embassy agreed to a strategic partnership with Kirkens Nødhjelp with a focus on equality and human trafficking. The partnership contain two main projects, the first one will attempt to focus on important aspects of fighting violence against women, this is for example to provide information, educate about ones rights, make males conscious about this violence and establish crisis centres. An important goal with this project is the implementation and increased consciousness about this legislation.

The second project involves migration and human trafficking. With an integrated approach it has the role of creating a safe migration between Vietnam and Laos and reintegrating migrants and victims of trafficking that are returning to Vietnam. The project will attempt to be preventative through information sharing, better standards of living and finally to contribute towards the reestablishment of women that are returning to Vietnam. In addition to that, the embassy is also working on a leadership training with a curriculum that address the issues of women and people of ethnic minorities.
