Mohamed ElBaradei and the IAEA received the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize at Oslo City Hall on 10 December 2005.
13/12/2005 :: This year’s prize was awarded in two equal parts to the IAEA (The International Atomic Energy Agency) and ElBaradei, its secretary general for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way.
- While building on the important work of his predecessors, he has managed to strengthen still further the positions both of the Director General and of the IAEA. Today’s award is thus very much a tribute to Mohamed ElBaradei in person, but is also intended to recognise the 2,300 staff from 90 countries who currently work for the IAEA, as well as the many who worked there before, said the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Ole Danbolt Mjøs.
The Nobel weekend in Oslo ended with a star-studded concert Sunday night which was shown on TV in more than one hundred countries. At the concert a long list of great, international artists paid tribute to this year's Prize winner in Oslo.
